My story!
I thought I’d share my story with everyone, so you can see why I’ve started being more concerned about my period. And maybe, someone will come across this story and say “Wow, I have those problems too!” And make the switch to eco-friendly, comfy options.
I’ve always hated my period. Before I started the Pill (which I want to have a conversation about later—I want to go off hormones and stuff) I had the worst cramps. I threw up from them a few times, and one time I almost passed out in the hallway while in my dorm when I was an undergrad. Even though I was in so much pain and discomfort, I feel what really made it worse was my options of keeping my clothes and other personal effects blood free.
My period is much more bearable now! But I just couldn’t get over how terrible disposable products felt. I wear pads more than tampons, and there is seriously NO pad that ever stays straight in my underwear. Even with the wings, which mostly end up sticking together anyways, I feel like I could never get them in an even position. I always end up getting blood in the front or back of my underwear. So many of my poor, cute panties are permanently stained with an outline of a pad! Then, there’s always that great adhesive pinching of the hair down there. Ugh! I don’t really shave that much, and that HURTS! And how about the sweating?? The combination of the fake “cottony feel” and plastic underside, I always felt wet, even if it wasn’t the blood. And if I was busy and couldn’t get to a bathroom? The pads start falling apart when you wear them too long, and you really have to watch the smell! Ugh!
Tampons weren’t that big of a deal to me, but I did use them quite a bit when I swim. And even though I would put them in correctly, I always felt uncomfortable. And the WORST was when I was on a pretty light day but still bleeding a little bit, and I’d have the take the tampon out. It would be so dry and painful, and the inside of me would just hurt.
Recently I’ve just become fed up. I knew about menstrual cups but always thought I wouldn’t be able to do it. Reusables? I always thought that would be like wearing a wad of cotton in my underwear. After much research, I finally bought a menstrual cup. Then, I switched to natural disposable pads. But then I ordered my reusables and I’ll never go back. No leaks, no sweating, no hurting! And in the whole process of buying all of these items for myself, I’ve learned how environmentally important it is to make the switch. I’ve also learned about some really nasty things that the disposables contain. And this is why I’ve created this blog.
I didn’t get to wear my reusables for the majority of my past period because, I also learned an interesting fact: anesthesia stops your period! And I just had my wisdom teeth yanked. Learn something new every day :)
Kudos if you stuck through my story. I’ll stop now to keep this short! I still have tons of ideas floating around on how to make my posts, so bear with me if my posts seem a little scattered at the beginning.
Do you have any stories to share??
